"Memories of Christmas Baking Day" by Aryn the Libraryan

"My favorite Christmas memories are of "Baking Day," which is an annual tradition. I used to bake cookies with my Great Grandma, and there was even one recipe that Grandpa had to stir. Those Date Nut Roll cookies were amazing!

Those two were lifetime Baptists and so encouraging. Grandpa's mealtime blessing still rolls around in my heart and mind.

When I was a teenager, I began inviting a couple of friends over for baking days. Sometimes we could stretch it out a week or two. Being homeschoolers helped ;). We always made plates for giving away, and had tins full to last us the month of December.

Continuing to my 20's, friends would start asking for the date months ahead, and my brothers would bring friends home to join us. With jobs and other responsibilities, we had to plan carefully and pack it all into one day.

Christmas music, friends, family, and cookies... and my mom would make a big lunch, either French Dip sandwiches or Cheesy Green Chili Chicken Rice Soup. Something substantial that would cut through the sugar high we were experiencing!

This has been the highlight of the season for most of my life. I had to give it up for a while because of food sensitivities, which made it really hard to get into the Christmas spirit. However, I have worked out several recipes for cookies and frosting, and I am very excited about this year's Baking Day!!

Getting my sons involved, and restarting an important family tradition. Sharing family stories, talking and what God is doing in our lives, enjoying good cookies!!"

  1. I really enjoyed todays post as it brought back many happy memories of my childhood, baking cookies, many, many cookies for Christmas giving with my Mom. I continued it into my adulthood and marriage and often made upwards of 20 different varieties to give to others. The past few years I stopped baking because it wasn't fun to do by myself once the family left. Maybe I should break out the mixing bowls and cookie sheets again.
Thanks for sharing with us Aryn and Cheryl.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. I can only imagine how much you cherish those memories of making cookies with your dear Mom, and it is so special that you have carried that precious tradition with your own children. 20 different kinds at once! That is amazing! YES, I vote that you take out those bowls and cookie sheets again! Thank you so much for your sweet visit, my friend!

  2. Ho dear Aryn what lovely stories and memories. So very different from Oz. We are in summer.. its warm and swimming weather... and camping. We went camping every summer and had Christmas in a tent.. in fact when 22 only had one Christmas in a home.. that was my 8th when dad rolled thd car and so camping was delayed a week while car repaired.
Lord bless dear sisters in your snowy Christmas. I love our summer Christmas.

Thanks for sharing, and may God bless you.

  3. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful memories with us, Aryn. My beloved Mom made the very best Christmas candies and cookies. She would spend days in her kitchen baking and then sharing with those who needed a little love and care!

    1. Aw, what a sweet story, Pam! I love recalling those special memories, especially at Christmas time! Our hearts go home for Christmas, and it is also when we seem to most miss those who are no longer with us. Your Mom sounds like a wonderful person with a kind and giving heart...like you, sweet friend. God bless you!

  6. Oh what wonderful memories! And it's so good to see those memories being shared with the next generations also. I can no longer bake like I used to, but it's so special seeing my own adult children passing along the cooking & baking with their families now. Blessings to you, Aryn and Cheryl!
