Melissa Evans Shares Her Favorite Christmas Memory

"My Favorite Christmas Memory" by Melissa Evans

"I was 13, my brother Rusty was 12, and my baby brother Curtis was 10.  A close family member had attacked my Mom spreading vicious lies and gossip about her.  My mom was so devastated by the things that had been said and done that she decided we were NOT having Christmas.  It was hard to see my Mom so sad and depressed.  I told her that we HAD to have Christmas.  She didn’t feel like decorating and refused to get a tree.  My Dad wasn’t sure what to do about it.

My brothers and I decided that we would do everything ourselves, finding a tree, decorating it and the entire house.  We went into the woods near our house, cut a tree down(it was a cedar tree and very prickly), decorated it and the inside/outside of our house while Mom was at work.  When Mom got home, she was so surprised.  She cried and cried....happy tears!  She couldn’t believe how hard we worked and our determination to have Christmas.

That year was one of the most special Christmases ever!! My brothers and I, along with the Lord’s help, were able to pull Mom out of a deep, dark depression.  From that year on, we started a family tradition.  We would turn all the lights off in the house, leaving only the Christmas tree lights on, while drinking hot chocolate and each share what we were most thankful for.  That year Mom was most thankful for her children!"

  1. That was such a special memory and brought tears to my eyes. I could feel the worry for her Mom in her words and I'm so impressed by how much they cared and loved her through her depresson, even at their young ages. Thank you Melissa, for sharing with us all today.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. I know. Isn't that the sweetest thing? I can only imagine how much her mother heart was warmed by the love and defense of her children. Thank you so much for your sweet visit and kind words, Betsy!

  2. Dear Cheryl ... I have been enjoying these posts of yours so sorry for not commenting, I’ve not been well. This story of Melissa’s is particularly touching it reminds me of scriptures “..a little child will lead them”... may it always be so, O Lord..
BTW although you very kindly reply through the option to reply on those comment boxes they’re not sent to me or other commenters by Google.
Unless we subscribe to comments from each of your blog posts, or if we come back and read them. Don’t know why they put this option when it doesn’t work, bit redundant from when it did perhaps? No idea, just know it doesn’t work! I’ve tested it numerous times.
Thanks for being a blessing, and may God bless you too.

    1. I am so glad you are enjoying the Christmas posts, Shaz! I am sorry to hear that you have not been well. May God bless and send the healing you need! I do not understand why you are not getting my replies. I do not know what else to do to get them to you, other than to suggest that you come back later to read them, as I always, always try to respond to every, single comment here. It might take me a little while, but I diligently try to do it as soon as I can. I think you DO have to subscribe to comments from each blog post in order to be informed if I leave a reply. Otherwise, I don't think Google would know that you want a reply. I think this is a standard requirement. I don't get replies from comments I leave at other people's blogs unless I check the box to be notified. It is not an automatic thing - you do have to check that box each and every time, unfortunately. I hope this helps you! Thank you for persevering and leaving a comment, and God bless you, too!

  5. Wonderful story! God made Melissa a leader from childhood. It's a good reminder that we can learn from our children, especially when they have pure and righteous determination. It has served her and our Father well!

And what a pretty voice! Awesome!
