The Inner Views of The Benham Brothers

"And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar,
saying that there is another king, one Jesus."
Acts 17:10
(KJV)

Praise God for Jason and the men in the early church who
"turned the world upside down"!
These men were willing to go against the cultural tide of their day.
They were not afraid to do "contrary to the decrees of Caesar", when the decrees of Caesar were contrary to the law of Almighty God.
They loudly and unashamedly proclaimed "that there is another King"...
one called Jesus!

And, praise God for a modern day Jason and his twin brother, David,
who are standing firm against the cultural tide of our day,
who are willing to step out of complacency and face their own Goliaths,
armed with the truth that the battle is the Lord's.

We first heard Jason and David's incredible testimony last September at a conference where I was a part of Concerned Women for America's prayer team.
On a recent Thursday evening, we were once again blessed to hear them speak,
while attending another function on behalf of CWA.
Imagine how blessed we felt when God orchestrated a way for us to meet them personally
before the event began!
To God be the glory.

It is with great respect that I present to you the
of Identical Twins, David and Jason,
The Benham Brothers.

Cheryl:  Can you give us a little information about your background?

David & Jason:  We grew up as preacher’s kids in Dallas, TX.  Our lives consisted of school, sports, and Sunday school.  At age 12 we started our first company - a small landscape company that grew to about 25 accounts before we went to college.  Our dream was always to play pro baseball, and after graduating from Liberty University, God gave us that opportunity in the late 90’s.  Although we never made it to the Big Leagues, we did play professionally, which was a dream come true.

Cheryl:  When did you first become a Christian? What life events led up to your decision to follow Jesus, and how has that choice impacted your lives?

Jason & David:  Both of us were 12 when we got saved.  Jason was at a chapel service at our Christian school, and David was at a Christian youth camp.  From that day forward, we committed to reading the Bible every day.  We were little hellions for a while, but in time we began to grow and mature in our faith.  We were two of the most ambitious and rambunctious kids you could meet, so growing in Christ is all we needed for God to harness our strength for development and not destruction.

Cheryl:  Will you kindly share your story with us about HGTV’s “Flip It Forward”? How did the show come about? Why was it suddenly cancelled? How has this whole situation changed your lives and ministry?

David & Jason:  After our time in pro ball we moved our families to Charlotte, NC and started a real estate company.  From small beginnings in 2003, we grew to 100 offices in 35 states by 2010.  From there, we began to create other companies and non-profits as our entrepreneurial spirits were on hyper-drive.  We were approached by a production company in 2012 to do a reality show, and, after signing a straight-to-series contract with HGTV, we landed in the midst of a media firestorm as we refused to be silent about our faith.

It started when HGTV announced the show and started airing commercials.  At that time a few activist groups began putting intense pressure on HG to cancel the show because of our “extreme” beliefs, such as being pro-life, believing in traditional marriage, and that Jesus is the only way to Heaven.  HG wanted to stick with us, as they already knew all of our beliefs prior to signing us, but as the pressure mounted they let us go.  But we know that whatever the devil meant for evil God means for good, and we have since been traveling the country using this platform to proclaim the truth that Jesus is the answer to all of our nation’s problems.

Cheryl:  What would you say are the most pressing issues in the cultural battlegrounds of our day? What are the biggest threats to our religious liberties?

Jason & David:  The darkness in our culture today manifests in three specific areas - the termination of life (abortion), the redefinition of marriage, and the rise of militant Islam.  But God has not called us to be issues-fighters - He’s called us to be kingdom-advancers.  This means we lead with the Gospel because the truth is what sets people free.

The biggest threat to our religious liberty today is the silence of the church.  By our silence, we give our affirmation.  When Christians stand for truth it provides liberty for everyone - including Muslims, Atheists, Buddhists, Hindus, those with no religion - EVERYONE!

Cheryl:  As Christian parents, Kevin and I are doing our utmost to raise a son who will stand up for Jesus and live a life that glorifies Him. What advice can you offer to those of us who are endeavoring to raise Godly children in a society that is increasingly hostile toward the God we serve? How can we lay that impenetrable foundation that will enable them to stand in spite of opposition, and even possible persecution? When we heard your testimony at the TNG Conference in September, you shared about your Dad and the way you were raised and how he instilled Godly values into your lives. Would you care to share any of those experiences here as encouragement to Christian parents?

David & Jason:  We’re in it with you.  We have young kids as well.  The one thing our dad did that has made a lasting impression on us is that he raised us to be warriors.  He taught us from the outset that we are in a spiritual battle and that God uses people to accomplish His will on the earth.  We learned that while we’re here on the earth we are a part of the church militant, which means we have to be engaged in the spiritual battle that rages in the earth, not just culturally, but personally as well.  So, if Christians are made to be fighters and they aren’t fighting, they won't experience the fullness of God in their lives.

Cheryl:  It was such a dear blessing to meet the two of you and hear you speak on Thursday night. One of the most moving parts of your speech and one that has most vividly lingered in our minds is when you spoke of the contrasted effects the wind has on a candle versus embers, and you applied those thoughts to the Holy Spirit. Will you share those thoughts with us here?

Jason & David:  Knowing we are the light of the world, if we view our light as a little candle then the winds of culture can easily blow it out.  But if we see ourselves as burning embers, like in a fire pit, then when the cultural winds blow it will actually ignite the fire in us.  The same wind that snuffs out the candle ignites the burning embers.  Spending time with Jesus, in His Word and prayer, is what it takes to kindle the fire of our faith.

Cheryl:  Your energy and enthusiasm for righteousness is so inspiring and contagious. What would you say to those who are discouraged in the fight against wrong? Is there still hope to turn things around? How do the two of you remain enthusiastic, zealous, and so completely “on fire” for God?

David & Jason:  This is a great time to be alive!  God knew how dark it would get at this time, and He created each one of us to be here now for this very hour.  If we keep our focus on God, our faith will replace fear because with God all things are possible!

Cheryl:  How can we pray for you, your wives, and your families? Are there specific needs you would like us to lift to the Father during this current season of your lives and ministry?

Jason & David:  Just pray our kids grow to love Jesus with all their hearts - that’s by far the most important thing in our lives right now.  As we travel we aren’t home as much as we’d like, so please pray for the spiritual growth of our children.

Cheryl:  In closing, will you share the Word of God with us? What are some of your favorite Scriptures and/or what is God laying upon your hearts to speak to us here?

David & Jason:  Jason’s favorite passage is Mark 14:50 - “Then they all deserted Him and fled.”  I put this on my baseball glove in pro ball because it was a constant reminder that I’m not better in possibility than the worst deserter is in actuality.  This tends to keep me humble. David’s is Ephesians 6:10, “Finally brothers, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” We need to be strong in these last days!

A BIG thank you to you, Jason & David, for taking the time to answer our questions
and grant us this interview!
What a blessing you are to all of us!
We are forever grateful to both of you.
Most of all, thank you both for standing firm,
for being the examples we need and long to see in these perilous times (2 Timothy 3:1-5),
for taking a lead, front line position on the battlegrounds of this fight for faith and religious liberty.
Thank you for valuing the approval of God
more than the praise of men,
for not taking the easy way out,
for refusing the bait of fame if it required you to compromise your convictions,
and for making the decision to follow Jesus, whatever the cost.

The Inner Views of Tonya Shellnutt

"As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received."
Ephesians 4:1
(NIV)

Looking back in retrospect, one of the most meaningful new entrances into my life in 2015 was, undoubtedly, the dear lady I am interviewing for this portion of Inner Views.
The way we met was unusual.

Let me explain.
I have been impressed with Concerned Women for America for years,
often seeing news bits with Penny Nance speaking out against abortion and other issues
that are close to my heart.
So, one morning, early in 2015, when I got an email from CWA announcing that the state I live in was, for the first time ever, going to have a State Director for CWA, I was ecstatic.
The email explained that our new director would be a lady who
was moving to our state from Montana, where she had served as the state director there.
There was a spot to "click" and read more about her, which I did.
There, it gave the opportunity to either email her or call her, to get acquainted.

Immediately, I felt one of those unmistakable Holy Spirit nudges to contact her.
At first, I thought I would email, because the thought of talking to her seemed intimidating to me.
But, the longer I sat at my laptop composing an email to her,
the more that still, small voice kept urging, "Why don't you call her instead?"

I finally decided to be obedient, picked up the phone, and dialed her number.
I found that my intimidation was unnecessary, as my phone call was very warmly received,
and we were both at ease and enjoyed a sweet and encouraging conversation.
I found that her worldview was the same as mine,
and that the burdens upon my heart, were upon hers, also.

We made plans to meet after she moved to our state, and I hung up the phone inspired
and looking forward to our meeting.

Fast forward past many emails between the two of us to last September,
when my family and I attended a conference to be a part of the Concerned Women for America
prayer team.

There, the new director and I were finally able to meet face-to-face,
and we shared a wonderful time together!
We laughed, but we also cried, as she told her side of the story about that first phone call
and about some of the things she was going through the day I called her.
I had no idea.
Just another example of how God works on both ends of a situation,
and how important it is that we mind God, when we feel His Spirit nudging us to do something.
We just never know what is riding upon that nudge, and to fail to follow His lead
could absolutely impact the life of another.

This dear lady has become very precious to my heart, and the more I get to know her and work with her, the more the Lord strengthens our bond.

She is training me to work for CWA as a Prayer Action Leader,
and I look forward to what God has in store for this venture in 2016!

I am ever so grateful to her for sharing her story/testimony with us.
I will forewarn you that you may need tissues while reading.
She has been through a lot of pain, but God has redeemed that pain,
and He has turned it into a real blessing to many, including me.

So, without further delay, I would like to introduce to you,
SC State Director for Concerned Women for America,
Tonya Shellnutt.

The
.
of
Tonya Shellnutt.

Cheryl:  Can you give us an introduction of who you are, a bit about your personal Christian testimony/journey, and the issues that are closest to your heart?

Tonya:  My story isn’t one that is all warm and fuzzy. I had a pretty rough upbringing despite being very loved by my mother. My birth father left when I was six months old, and my mom married a man who was in law enforcement, but who was a drunk. I was sexually assaulted when I was just five years old by a neighbor whom my parents left me alone with. Obviously, the traumatic incident left me scarred and was one that would shape my future negative behavior patterns. When I was 21 years old I met my future husband Rich, and he suggested I enter into treatment for my alcohol addiction. Really it was just a way for me to cope with the traumatic events in my life. I went through treatment and have been sober for 21 years. In 1997, I dedicated my life to Jesus Christ and have been freed from the chains of shame and guilt. My mother passed away in 1997 in a motorcycle accident. That day, I lost my mom and my dad. I do not know my birth father, and, unfortunately, my adoptive dad wants nothing to do with me. I am orphaned from the world’s standpoint, but so loved by my Heavenly Father. This is my story. This is what has shaped everything about how I live my life. I work with women in crisis situations who have been physically abused, dealing with addictions, or just needing someone to mentor them. Everyone wants to be loved and if we can help them bring Hope, then we will see real change and grace.

Cheryl:  For those who are not familiar with Concerned Women for America, will you kindly explain their history, their mission, and the seven core issues they defend?

Tonya:  Concerned Women for America is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization, with over 500,000 members across the country.

The Judeo-Christian worldview once served as the bedrock of Western Civilization. In recent times, Western Civilization has willingly chosen to exchange the faith and logic of a Biblical worldview for an irrational secularism based on an unthinking and cruel relativism. This foolish exchange is at the root of the glaring injustices of modern American public policy.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) affirms the Bible's unmistakable standard that there is right and wrong; that God is the Authority who established right and wrong by creation and by revelation in His Word, the Bible; that He has sent a Savior, Jesus Christ, to free us from our sin (wrong) by simple repentance and to enable us through the Holy Spirit to do what is right.

Thus, through its Board of Trustees, CWA has established seven core issues on which we focus our efforts. Because the culture war that has engulfed our society makes claims on every area of life, we must set priorities thoughtfully to determine how best to fulfill our calling.

Provided below are very basic descriptions of our core issues.

Sanctity of Life:
CWA supports the protection of all innocent human life from conception until natural death. We also support alternatives to abortion and healing for mothers suffering from the results of abortion.

Defense of Family:
CWA believes that marriage consists of one man and one woman. We seek to protect and support the Biblical design of marriage and the gift of children.

Education:
CWA supports reform of public education by returning authority to parents and also accessibility to alternate forms of education.

Religious Liberty:

CWA supports the God-given rights of individuals in the United States and other nations to pray, worship, and express their beliefs without fear of discrimination or persecution.

National Sovereignty:
CWA believes that neither the United Nations nor any other international organization should have authority over the United States in any area. We also believe the United States has the right and duty to protect and secure our national borders. We believe in budget restraint which embodies responsible spending, small government, and a budget in which the U.S. government spends within its means and ceases to steal from future generations.

Sexual Exploitation:
CWA endeavors to fight all pornography, obscenity, prostitution, and sex slavery.

Support for Israel:
CWA believes that the people and nations who stand with Israel and the Jewish people will be blessed by God. We believe that any foreign policy effort to withdraw U.S. support for Israel is in direct contradiction to America’s national interests.

Cheryl:  Of all of the committees, causes, and ministries available, what drew you to this particular coalition, and how did you personally become involved with CWA?

Tonya:  I believe that the prayers of my Great-Grandmother were the blessing of my salvation. She prayed for me and told me stories about the Great Depression. All she wanted for her birthday one year was butter. Butter, nothing else. I couldn’t even imagine, and it inspires me to protect the freedoms that she endured for me. My grandfather was in WWII. The military is VERY important to me. They know what sacrifice is, and there is nothing more inspirational than one laying down their life for another, just as Christ did for us. We are called to reflect that same sacrifice. Why wouldn’t we be involved in causes that inspire others to do the same and reflect biblical values?

Cheryl:  We are in the midst of a spiritual downward spiral in America, yet I am encouraged to believe that God is raising up a generation with a renewed passion for righteousness. On a personal level, as a mother with children still living at home, what do you feel is the single-most important thing, habit, or trait we should focus on instilling and fostering in the hearts of our children to give them the strong foundation they will need in the future?

Tonya:  One of the most important things we must do for our children is to prepare them for the real world. Yes, it is important to shield them from age-appropriate content, but look for every opportunity to be a teachable moment. A lot of the women I mentor have very little coping skills. It isn’t because they were brought up in terrible homes, rather they were not given coping skills to deal with adversity. Kids need to see adversity and how you handle it. They need to see Jesus in us and how we cling to His word and promises and how they help us get through life. More often than not, kids learn by example, not the words we say. Therefore, if we teach our children to love Jesus, life skills, and empower them to greatness, we will see a generation rise up and protect our faith and freedom.

Cheryl:  I absolutely believe the quote that says, "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world." As Christian women, wives, and mothers, how can we most effectively wield and utilize the power of our influence to promote the cause of Jesus Christ?

Tonya:  Women hold a tremendous amount of influence. God ALWAYS intended it for us to use for good. We have a society today where women misuse their God-given power. I wrote a book about this. It is called Woman Power Revolution. The book isn’t about women gaining power, rather about how our wounds can define how we treat men. If we don’t let God heal our wounds and treat our husbands and children as the Lord would see fit, we can use our power and influence in destructive ways. We were meant to empower others to greatness. God gave us this gift. If we live our lives for selfish gain, rather than seeking how to leave behind a meaningful legacy of courage and intentionality, we fail to utilize our God-given potential. Everyone needs a cheerleader, so encouraging those around us can make a life lasting impact. I like to refer to God’s desire for us to be sparklers for Christ. Light up a room when you walk in!

Cheryl:  Through your involvement with CWA, you are on the front lines of a cultural battleground, fighting a war that must seem insurmountable and impossible to win. On a personal level, how do you stay encouraged to press on and continue the fight?

Tonya:  My story is one that God has allowed perseverance and endurance to be developed into my being. 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God gave us a spirit NOT of fear but of power and love and self-control.” When we trust the Lord to walk us through the valleys and we believe He is Sovereign, life is totally doable and we endure for the sake of our legacy which is ultimately God’s story of our lives. Don’t give up before the miracle happens.

Cheryl:  The role of Christian wife and mother is truly one of great demands and responsibility. Adding the obligations of ministry and/or advocacy to that already-overflowing-plate can be overwhelming. How do you find balance?  What advice would you give the woman who is reading this and feeling called to become more involved with CWA, but feels intimidated?

Tonya:  Our first and most important ministry we can ever have is our family. If we neglect our family, we have strayed from the will of God. However, one of the greatest tragedies, in my opinion, is not doing something because of fear. If God has put a desire in your heart, don’t be afraid, and minimize every reason why you can’t. Our families can be inspired by our courage and boldness. I would never counsel a woman to walk with such caution in life that she lives her life paralyzed. There is little freedom in that. God tells us over and over in scripture, DO NOT BE AFRAID. This isn’t a suggestion.

What an amazing and powerful testimony of the redemption plan Jesus put in place as He hung on an old, rugged cross for each one of us!

Tonya is living proof that, through His grace, we can rise triumphant over our past,
regardless how difficulty-ridden it happens to be,
and we can emerge victorious over every obstacle satan has managed to insert into our lives.

Dear friends, my prayer is that you will find hope in Tonya's story.
That you will come to the full realization that Jesus loves you,
and He wants to give you a new start, free from guilt and despair.

We are here to pray for you.
If you would like to share specific prayer needs with us,
please contact me via email, and, if you would like me to,
I will happily share your requests with Tonya, also, so she can pray for you, too.

Please keep Tonya and her family in your prayers,
as they continue to courageously fight on the front lines of the intense cultural battlefields of our day.
Surely God is using them to portray what it means to stand for His truth.

Thank you for reading, and thank you, dear Tonya,
for opening your heart to us here.
Transparency takes a great amount of courage, and we so appreciate you being willing
to share your redemption story with us.
I know your testimony will bless and inspire many!

The Inner Views of Dr. Alveda King

"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified."
I Corinthians 2:2
(KJV)

You never know when one moment, one event, or one decision can change and impact your life
in ways you could never have beforehand imagined.

God does.
And He often orchestrates our steps and moves us in directions that will forever change us for the better.

Several months ago, I was invited to attend the then-upcoming Truth For A New Generation conference to volunteer as a member of Concerned Women For America's Prayer Team at the event.

At the time, we were in the throes of some very difficult trials in our personal lives,
and I saw no possibility of ever being able to do what I was being asked.
However, I prayed about it and told the Lord I was willing to go if He would remove the obstacles and work out a way.

Through happenings that were nothing short of miracles,
He did make a way, and my little family and I headed for the conference.

That weekend literally changed our lives.
One of those changes came about through our personally meeting many of the Concerned Women for America ladies, enjoying sweet fellowship with them, and through this, God giving me much-needed answers as to whether or not He wanted me to proceed in becoming more involved with CWA.
And another of those changes came through the wonderful privilege we had of listening to several of the key note speakers while there.

Today, God has opened the amazing opportunity for me to introduce you to one of those speakers!
The message she brought forth at TNG blessed and encouraged and inspired us in more ways than we can even express, and when we later contacted her to request an interview by phone,
she was beyond gracious and granted our request!

So, without further ado, I present to you,
author of King Rules and Director of African American Outreach with Priests for Life,
Dr. Alveda King.

The

of
Dr. Alveda King.

Cheryl:  God has placed you on the front lines of ministry in our time. He has given you a platform of your own to stand for truth and what is right. How does the battle your uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., fought in his generation compare with the cultural wars you are fighting today?

Dr. Alveda King:  Well, as we look at cultural wars throughout the ages, we can go back to the 20th century when my father, Reverend A.D. King, Martin Luther’s brother, Martin Luther King, Jr., I also marched during those times, but all the way through the history of humanity, starting with the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, there has been strife and contention. And the most successful campaigns against those have been when people called on the name of the Lord and depended on the Lord and set aside strife, envy, and offense in all of that. So, that is what I have worked to do myself, and that’s what I’m trying to do now.

Cheryl:  Evil is waging war upon God’s church, in these last days. Sometimes, there are so many battles being waged at one time, it is hard to keep up the fight, and God calls us to choose specific battles to fight, on an individual basis. What would you say are the most pressing issues God has placed upon your heart, personally, and what is the main burden of your unique ministry?

Dr. Alveda King:  Well, the most pressing issue now as an evangelist is to let people know about Jesus Christ and Him crucified and John 3:16. That can touch on so many other things...that touches on my pro-life work, my work for natural marriage and family, eradicating evil, even down to ISIS and that battle.  So, I think that when I look at it as in a perspective of prayer and evangelizing, then everything else can be included in that.

Cheryl:  How has growing up in the shadow of your uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., shaped and molded your own ministry?

Dr. Alveda King:  Well, I came up under the shadow of God’s wings according to Psalms 91, and so, just being covered by God as the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the daughter of his brother, Reverend A.D. King.  It’s just wonderful being in this family and having been brought up by people who love the Lord.

Cheryl:  You are the Director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life. Can you tell us more about this ministry?

Dr. Alveda King:  Well, Priests for Life is a Catholic ministry. I’m a non-denominational Christian, but I came in to work with African-American Outreach for Priests for Life over 10 years ago now. And so it’s been a beautiful experience informing the public about the harms of abortion and related products to that (abortion) that are harmful, chemicals and devices for birth control and all of that, how its genocide, the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, etc. So, I have been a part of Priests for Life for 10 years now, over 10 years actually, and they’ve just been a tremendous blessing to me.

Cheryl:  Can you share any childhood memories that you have with your father, as a minister, and your uncle (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)?  Is there anything you could share with us that we could share with our readers...just some special memories that you might have?

Dr. Alveda King:  I was blessed to go to church and hear them all preach.  Daddy King, my grandfather, who encouraged my mother not to abort me in 1950, not to have a D&C, abortion was illegal, but a D&C, and that he had seen me in a dream three years before I was born.  He described me.  I was born looking just like that.  My Mom and Dad had, during their marriage, five of us.  I was their firstborn.  Daddy King used to preach about faith, hope, and love, and the “least of these”, helping others, caring more about others than ourselves.  My father, A.D. King, preached about the miracles of Jesus, and Jesus became very real to me as a girl. Listening to my Daddy’s sermons, and then my uncle’s sermons on the Good Samaritan, for example, and The Love of God.  All of their sermons impacted my life and helped to shape and mold my spirituality. And it is true...train up a child in the way he or she should go, and when the child grows up, they won’t depart, or in my case, return to it.  So, I never really departed from the truth upon which I was raised.

Cheryl:  I am a Prayer Action Leader for Concerned Women for America, and as you well know, we really love to pray and get under the burden for those of you who are out there on the front lines.  How can we pray for you, specifically, and your ministry?  Are there needs or burdens upon your heart in this current season of your life that you would specifically like us to pray for?

Dr. Alveda King:  My heart longs that people will abandon and come away from strife, offense, and arguing and division and come together as one as a repentant world, as a repentant nation, a repentant community, a repentant family, a repentant individual, and ask God first to forgive us, then help us to learn to forgive others, and that we, in love, can move forward together. That is a sincere desire of my heart.

Cheryl:  Amen!  Thank you, dear sister!

Dr. Alveda King:  Bless you, my sister in Christ.  Thank you, and God bless!
