Who is On the Lord's Side?

"Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. "

Exodus 32:26

If you are a parent, you know how much it hurts to see your child going through a hard battle.  No matter how old they are, they're still your baby, and if you are a mother, the "mama grizzly" in you cannot be suppressed.  It's as automatic as breathing and rises up in defense of the ones you love.

I observed in disbelief as Zach read vicious comment after vicious comment in response to some words he recently posted online.  To tell you the truth, I could hardly believe it.  His words were not hostile.  They weren't political or even controversial ~ at least not to me.  On the contrary, they were very humble and kind and sweet.  Had Zach said something mean-spirited, I could understand the hate-filled retailiation. but the biggest shock and most enlightening thing was why the nature of his words reaped such hate-filled, venomous retaltiation.  The reason the online commenters were filled with such anger and rage was because Zach had written about his Christian faith.  He had made a comment that was very much in defense of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Bless his dear heart.  I watched as his fingers flew over the keyboard and it became a struggle to keep up with answering the many hate-filled retorts being fired back at him.  They were coming thick and fast like bullets from an automatic firearm.  This went on for three hours.  He was doing all he could to respond and implement the apologetics so deeply grounded in him, but the influx of comments made it hard for him to keep up.

Finally, I said, "Zach, did you get ANY comments in support of what you said?"  In a very sad, defeated tone, Zach replied, "No, Mama.  Not even one."

What?????  Seriously?  In the innumerable sea of participants, there was not even one who stood with Zach as he defended Christianity - not just Christianity, but JESUS?  Were they all just "closet" Christians, or was there really not even one who believes in Him?  These were not just casual remarks.  They were filled with such vitriol.  Not necessarily directed at Zach in particular, but some of the most hateful things I have ever heard said to Zach or about Jesus.

I said, "Zach, do you realize if Jesus was here on the earth today, they would crucify Him again?"  It was in that moment that it occurred to me that Jesus Christ may well be the most hated person who ever lived.  The Man Who was GOD in the flesh, Who chose to leave the splendors of Heaven and come down to this sin-blighted world and lay down His life and shed His blood so these very haters could have the gift of eternal life.  The One I love more than life ~ hated by more people than anyone ever.  How can this be?

I'll tell you the truth.  I was angry.  Both for our dear Lord Jesus and for Zach.

"Should I just take down the post, Mama?"

His words hung in the air like a lead balloon.  "If I do, it will look like I am giving up in defeat."

Oh, my mama heart ached for him!  I weighed my words before answering, and then I said what I felt was best.

"Yes, Zach.  Please take down the post.  ALL this is doing is causing strife."  Not to mention what it was doing to him.  It literally broke my heart.

Judge me if you want for advising Zach to take down the post.  He not only took down the post, he left the whole platform and closed out his account.  He released it all and felt a whole lot better after doing so.  Jesus said this, "And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."  Mark 6:11

We are surely living in perilous times, are we not?  "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. " 2 Timothy 3:1-5

Sound familiar?

Have you ever felt so hated for being good?  For following Jesus with all your heart?  Things are getting heated, my friends.  To say you love Jesus is more and more becoming a "fighting words" catch-phrase.

Today, I read the saddest email from Jay Sekulow of American Center for Law & Justice.  Here is an excerpt:

"Christians are being targeted – even hunted out – all around the world.  In Nigeria, the numbers speak for themselves. By March, as many as 350 Christians had been murdered by Islamic radicals. Two months later, that number had almost doubled. By June, the death toll was over 1,200. And rising. Just days ago, another 33 Christians were killed in a single day.  How many more believers will be murdered by the end of August?

In India, Christians are being harassed and attacked by violent, radical Hindus and ordered to renounce Christ or run for their lives.  Pakistani Christians face violent abuse, rape, forced conversion, and the ever-looming threat of archaic blasphemy charges which are easily doled out and carry the penalty of death."

The powers of darkness are becoming bolder and more pronounced.  As things tighten up around us, and we see increased hostility to our Christian faith, the battle lines will become more and more clear, and you and I will be forced to answer the question, "Who is on the Lord's side?"  There may have been a time when we could take a more relaxed stance and live an on-the-fence life with one foot on the Lord's side and the other foot still dangling longingly on the side of the world.  That is a "luxury" we can "enjoy" no longer.  We are either on the Lord's side, or we are not.  We are either following Jesus and building up His cause, or we are following satan and supporting his vile agenda.

I know no one wants to discuss or mix politics with religion.  Whether we want to or not, we better start rethinking doing that.  I'm not naming names, nor am I out to smear anyone.  What I am talking about is the fact that we, the people, are going to give an account to Almighty God for everything we do in this life.  Including who we vote for and whether or not we even fulfilled our duty to vote.

We are blessed to live in a country where we still do have one small way to make a difference in the spiritual climate.  Voting for those whose idealogy most closely aligns with the Word of God has never been more important.  Remember, these are the people who nominate Supreme Court justices.  These are the men and women who make decisions about whether or not a baby in the womb has the right to live and be born, whether or not traditional marriage is upheld and protected, whether or not your children have the right to be homeschooled or taught in a Christian school environment, whether or not religious services will be permitted to happen, etc.

The future of our country really depends on us.  The choices for November's election are as clear as crystal.  Look at the important issues - like whether or not millions more babies will be slaughtered in the womb all the way up to the moment of birth (which candidate supports LIFE and opposes abortion?), whether God's definition for marriage and the building of family values will be protected (which candidate will appoint conservative, Bible-believing Supreme Court justices?), and whether you and I will even have a choice as to whether or not we get to go back to church and actually sing and praise our Creator en masse (which candidate's politcal career has proven they will stand up and fight for God, prayer, the Bible, and religious liberty?).

We will give an account to God for the things we do and do not do in this life, the things we support and do not support, and the stands we take and do not take.  That includes our voting decisions and whether or not we voted when we had the opportunity to make that small difference.

Jesus said, "Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." Mark 8:38

Things we took for granted in the past, we can take for granted no longer.  Keep in mind, as I mentioned above, the President of the United States is handed the grave responsibility of nominating Supreme Court justices who are handed a lifetime appointment.  To remind us all of how serious the repercussions of those Supreme Court decisions are, think about some of the most devastating decisions that group of nine have made in the past 58 years.  These have landed us where we are right now -

Due to the June 25, 1962 -Engel v. Vitale Supreme Court decision, our children are no longer allowed to pray in public school.  Do we even need to be reminded of the disastrous moral decline since that horrific decision was made?

Due to the June 17, 1963 - Abington Township v. Schempp Supreme Court decision, Bible reading was removed from our public school classrooms.  Without foundational teaching of what is right and what is wrong, we have steadily spiraled into complete lawlessness and disdain for anyone who wants to see it restored.

Due to the January 22, 1973 - Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, millions of innocent, unborn babies have been legally slaughtered in the womb.  Did you know that abortion was the leading cause of death worldwide in 2018 and 2019, and there have already been almost 29 million abortions performed in 2020?  If the blood of Abel cried to God from the ground after he was murdered by his brother, Cain, what must the sound of millions of murdered unborn babies sound like?  (Genesis 4:10)  Dear Lord in Heaven, it must be deafening to Your ears!

Due to the June 26, 2015 - Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision, the union God chose to symbolize the relationship between Jesus Christ and His church was "redefined" and opened up to any and all abominable perversions to God's definition of one man, one woman for life.  "Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." Ephesians 5:25-27

Just turn on the evening news, and you will see the results of turning our backs on God.  If you pull the foundation out from under a standing building, it has no other option but to fall.

Any nation that would do the above-mentioned things truly does not deserve God's mercy.  Our decisions and actions deserve His most extreme wrath, but I am pleading with Him to once again have mercy on His people in this upcoming election.

As I watched our dear boy go through such anguish over the online back and forth, it hit me once again with such force that the torch has been handed to us.  This is our time.  We must stand firm for Jesus, for His cause, for God's holy Word, for the truth that has been entrusted to us - for the sake of our dear children, grandchildren, and future generations.  If we drop the ball, who will teach them what the truth really is?  Will we let it die while it is in our hands?  There will be eternal repercussions for the decisions we make, and we will all give an account of our actions one day.

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." 2 Corinthians 5:10

God is counting on us to do the right thing.

"And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none."  Ezekiel 22:30

Will you please make up the hedge and stand in the gap?  Will you please stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me and pray?  And, I hope with all my heart that you will vote for the one who will fight for the unborn, who will fight to keep our churches open, who will fight to preserve religious liberty, and who will appoint conservative Supreme Court justices.  The lifetime appointment, long-term ripple effects will be long, long lasting, as we can see demonstrated in our current society.

Thank you for listening to the burden God has placed upon my heart.  I cringe to write these kinds of posts, but the cause of Christ is far more important to me than my own comfort, I sure don't want Jesus to be ashamed of me (can you even imagine that?) and I will not be guilty of having anyone else's blood upon my hands.  (Ezekiel 33:2-9)  May God stir our hearts to yearn for widespread revival of His holiness - for the sake of our dear children who are fighting a much harder fight than you and I ever had to fight.

  1. Cheryl, I am absolutely aghast at how Zach was treated online for simply stating the truth of Jesus and Christian beliefs. Yes, we are in a battle for the soul of this country, and we must vote for those who uphold our Judeo-Christian heritage. We have no other choice, and it is a crucial one, perhaps the most important one in all of our lifetimes. I'm standing shoulder to shoulder with you, dear sister!
    Blessings!

    1. I am still in total shock, too, sweet friend. Just unbelievable that this Christian nation has sunk into such a Godless state. I believe your statement that this is perhaps the most important election in all of our lifetimes could not be more true or accurate. I shudder to think where we are headed if the wrong candidate is put into office. I am so thankful for your support, encouragement and friendship. May the Lord richly bless you.

  2. Reading that people wrote such hateful things to your son caused the "Let me hunt them down and snatch then bald headed!" to come out in me and I never met your baby! Honestly what is this world coming to?

    1. Aw, Regina, you are a gem. Such a true friend, and I thank the Lord for you. I think what this world is coming to is an end. That is all I can figure out - we are right at the midnight hour, and the Bridegroom is almost on His way. Even so, come Lord Jesus. I am so ready.

  3. My dear Cheryl, Dennis and I have had this conversation for several years now as we watched morality decline further and further. He is not on social media, but I am and when I read the hate-filled vitrolic language of some people who call themselves Christians, let along the people who admit they aren't believers, I can only shake my head in sorrow. Unfortuately I believe every single word you said was true about what was said to Zach because I have had some of it directed my way. I have been thinking of leaving FaceBook and Instagram too, although I don't spend much time on either one anymore anyway.
Part of our conversations have been about the end times and we both feel we are very close, if not in them right now. I truly expect to see our Lord and Savior, Sweet JESUS coming in the clouds very, very soon. I believe with the advent of the internet and the hard work of missonaries for years, everyone on this earth who has any interest, has had the opportunity to hear the gospel and so there is no longer a need to tarry. Of course, I admit I could be completely wrong and we may have a long, long time yet to go. The point is, it could be any day and I believe we need to be ready. We need to tell as many people as we can about Jesus and as you said in your post, if they refuse to listen or attack us for sharing Him, we shake the dust off our feet.
We are living in such evil and horrendous times. Never did I think in my lifetime I would hear AMERICANS shouting "Death to America!" What in the world? I want to snatch my grandbabies up and find somewhere to hide until the insanity stops. But honestly? I don't think it will. Satan has bound this earth up in His evil plans. The U.S. was one of the last bastions of good and kindness in the world. One of the last, if not the only, truly Christian nation, but we must admit it. We are no longer a Christian nation. When liars and decievers and mockers are celebrated and honesty, morality and love for God are attacked, we are no longer a good and kind nation.
Sorry, I'm on my soapbox. I'm so sad for my children and grandchildren who I don't think will ever experience the freedoms we have had. I'm sad for the people who have turned their back on our sweet, sweet Jesus and followed Satan while blinded to the truth. They have no idea what they will be facing for eternity.
I'm so glad that I know where I'm going. I have believed and I am able to KNOW that I will be in Heaven someday.
Hang in there Zach and Cheryl, (Kevin too.). The peace and blessings that come with knowing Christ are more than this world could ever offer. I know you know that already but it never hurts to be reminded.
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy

    1. Dear, sweet Betsy! How your words encouraged and comforted my heart today! I send out a wholehearted amen to all you said. My heart stays heavy with the thoughts of all that is going on around us. YES! Jesus IS coming! That is our hope! Oh, dear friend, you are so right. It could be any moment, and I just long to see His precious face - the One Who died for us and Who will protect us through all eternity! This life is not all we have. Our hope is of an eternity with Him, free from all evil and strife. Please don't apologize. I love your soapbox and say amen to all you said. Thank you, thank you, thank you for standing for truth in this vile time, and thank you for your support and words of encouragement to the three of us. Many blessings and much love to you today.

  5. Oh, your poor son! I'm sorry he didn't get any positive comments. :( Yes, you advised your son correctly! Surely the LORD is coming back soon! AND, you're correct about this election being very important! I live in a rural county in NE Ohio, & have been a poll worker for many years, but, now I'm wondering if it will be a "safe" job... last year in our training session, we had to learn how to defuse an upset voter (who would have ever thought we'd that in America!?)Hold onto Jesus, our only hope!

    1. Dear Barb, What a dear blessing your words were to me today! YES, He is coming! Oh, the blessed thought that we are nearing the time that He will catch us all away to be with Him forevermore! I am from Ohio - the Dayton area! So, we are fellow buckeyes! Oh, I can truly understand how you would not feel safe as a poll worker. We used to live in an area that was almost 100% the opposite political persuasion, and I used to feel so intimidated going to vote as they stood outside glaring at us and with their signs posted right near the polling place. I thought that was illegal, but it seems law and order are completely gone. I trust the Lord will please protect and watch over you as you work and that He will keep all evil far from you. I tell you, this doesn't even feel like America anymore. YES, my friend, I am doing my utmost to hold onto Jesus. I cry a lot these days, it seems, but I know He is here with us, and you are so right, He is our only hope. I am so thankful for your precious comment. May the Lord richly bless you.

  6. Oh, yes, the evilness and hatred of social media is alive and well these days. That is the main reason I deactivated my FAcebook account and no longer use it. Many years ago (mid 2000's), my daughter had a blog devoted to encouraging Christian girls in modesty and purity. You wouldn't believe the ugly comments she used to get---and that was 13 years ago. Things have only deteriorated since then.

Your poor daughter! I can only imagine the hate-filled responses she had to endure. Dear Lord, help us all to stay faithful - He that endures to the end, the same shall be saved.

  7. Cheryl, I do not know what your Zach wrote but if He is anything like his precious mama then I know every word he stated could be backed up biblical. I am so very sorry to hear this news. Heart breaking to say the least. I am so sorry. Things are only going to get worse I am afraid. But then we know where things are headed to say the least. But as I told a friend last week....God does not expect us to just sit back and not take a stand. I have another little younger friend that husband posted something recently on Social Media that He truly felt the Lord was leading him to post. It was not ugly, it was not overbearing and he even stated that some of what he said was his own opinion while the majority was backed up with God's Word. Needless to say he took down the post. His wife is a local school and was taking the heat. Just so, so sad that we are in this place...but as my younger friend's husband said...this world in which we live is not our home. Heaven is real...BUT SO IS HELL and HELL will be far more greater than the hell here on earth. I do hope that you and your precious family enjoy Labor day today dear Cheryl. Please convey to Zach that God hears him, knows his heart and is so very proud of him from me! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

It meant so much to all of us. Many hugs and blessings back to you today!

  8. Cheryl, I am so sorry Zach was attacked for the truth of Jesus Christ. I pray his faith is made stronger for the vile comments he received. I agree with everything you have written. I am reminded of the persecuted church around the world. As Christians in our nation, we have had it easy. I fear that is changing rapidly. My heart is so burdened, I stand shoulder to shoulder with you and pray that we would confess our sins as fellow believers and God would heal our land.

Much love and gratitude to you for your kind words.

  10. "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Zach is blessed for taking a stand. If God is for us, who can be against us? You are blessed to have such a son, and I pray this makes him stronger and surer in his faith. I'm off Facebook and Instagram for these very reasons. There's such hatred out there; Satan is wreaking havoc because he knows his days are short. How much do we say and how much do we keep quiet? In front of mockers, I say they don't even deserve a response. I pray even yet God will have mercy on us all despite our faithlessness as a nation. xo Deborah

Your words reminded me of the words my dear Mom so often said about satan knowing his time is short. I totally agree that in front of mockers, they do not deserve a response at all. 11. Great message, Cheryl. Hate is escalating; it's a spiritual war and I join you and the others who know how to fight such a war. Decrees and declares of God's Word as you pointed to holds so much power to send forth. Zach is strong! May God bless that young man for taking a stand at such a young age. I'm excited to see this because he is a leader like his parents. I know too well how you feel about the entanglement though because I go through that with my outspoken daughter, Carrie. I love your family; great Americans all, but wonderful Christians! May God bless you for the examples you are to this world. It is so hard to be in this world and not of it. I would love to have been there in one of your prayer times when this happened and you took it to Jesus. I'm with you all the way.

  12. Hi Cheryl, I'm so sorry to read about what Zach went through. It is soo disheartening and unsettling really. I got a small taste of this when I had promoted my book through an Ad on Facebook where apparently the title of my book alone was enough to bring about mocking comments against the Lord. And that is what hurts the most. I did engage a couple of times, but when it started to get worse, I went ahead and deleted their comments as I had the power to do through my own ad. It's one thing to have a debate with an atheist and leave those comments up, it's another to leave blasphemy against my Lord and Savior on an ad promoting my book which was written to bring Him glory, not to, as you say, re-crucify Him again.

Indeed, this year's election is one of the most important elections yet as I fear this nation is sliding down a slippery slope at snowball speed.

Thank you for always encouraging us in the Lord and for always standing in the gap for His names sake. I know He is saying, "Well done good and faithful servant" in regards to you even now.

    Sending you much love,
