The Day of Adversity is Here

“In the day of adversity consider.”
Ecclesiastes 7:14

Full Disclosure before you read any farther:
This post will not sit well with some of you.  Some of you will get mad at me.  You may even hit that "unsubscribe" button at the end of this post in your inbox.  Perhaps you will feel like leaving an unkind comment or sending us a mean email.  I want you to know that I love every person who will ever read this enough to tell you the truth in spite of how it makes you feel.  I apologize ahead of time if I, personally, hurt you in any way because that is the last thing I would ever want to do.  But, I do not apologize for the Word of God.  I didn't write it, and with all due respect, you will have to take up any complaints you have with Him.  I am NOT insinuating that I know God's mind.  I do NOT, and I have too much fear of God to be so presumptuous as to say such a thing.  Nor am I saying that the current pandemic is definitively God's judgment for our sins.  Please know that my heart breaks over all that is happening, and ALL I am asking you to do is consider the following thoughts that have been keeping me awake at night.

What a different world we live in than the world we lived in last Easter!  It has literally been turned upside down, and who would have ever dreamed that, by government mandate in America, we would be worshipping the Lord inside the walls of our own homes this Sunday!

Growing up, Easter Sunday was a big day.  No matter how tight money was, Mom and Dad always did their best to make sure I had a brand-new dress to wear to church.  It was just a given.  We not only dressed in our "Sunday best" on Easter.  We dressed in our "Easter Sunday best."  There was a difference.

In light of present conditions, doesn't it sound frivolous that we focus so much on our clothes and showing off new outfits?

Could it be that God wants us to get our minds off ourselves and to turn our thoughts to the One this day is all about, in the first place?
Could it be that God is "socially distancing" us from each other so we will be forced to face how socially distant we are from HIM?

Viewing things through a spiritual lens is my default perspective, and the way I am looking at this pandemic is no exception.  I take the six-word directive tucked into Ecclesiastes 7:14 very seriously.  "In the day of adversity consider."  That is exactly what I have been doing, as I continually seek the Lord about why this is happening.

I'm sure you can understand that I have been very tempted to not write and share this post.  There is this temptation to keep all content "middle of the road," remain politically correct, and not take the chance of rocking the boat.  But I tell you the truth, Jeremiah 20:9 sums it up for me, "Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not."

I hope you will hear me out.  I hope we can still be friends.  I hope you will understand that I didn't write the Bible, but I must live out the calling God has placed on my life.
If I don't deliver this burden, I will be held accountable for not speaking what God has told me to speak.  That is something I am not willing to have on my conscience, and I don't want anyone's blood on my hands.  (Ezekiel 33:1-10)

"In the day of adversity consider."

Consider this.

God is holy.  He abhors sin.  It is hard for me to imagine how things could get much more sinful in our world than they are right now.  If the founding fathers of America could somehow come back and see what is going on, they wouldn't even be able to recognize this as the same Christian nation they founded on Biblical principles.

Could it be that God is trying to get our attention and could this pandemic be a wakeup call?
Think of what He said in His Word.

Leviticus 26:14-16 says,
"But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments, if, instead, you reject My statutes, and if your soul abhors My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant, I, in turn, will do this to you: I will appoint over you a sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the soul to pine away."

We could put a checkmark beside every category in the above verse.
We do not obey God, we do not carry out His commandments, we blatantly reject His statutes, we pompously abhor His ordinances, and we have broken our covenant with Him.  We think we know better than He does, and with every law passed that is in complete opposition to His Word, we spit in His face.  We trample His will, remove His ten commandments from public property, and persecute Christians on American soil.

For many years, our nation has been on an unprecedented downward spiral of spiritual and moral decay.

Consider this.

On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States "struck down all state bans on same-sex marriage, legalized it in all fifty states, and required states to honor out-of-state same-sex marriage licenses in the case Obergefell v. Hodges." (Source)

That same night, the President of the United States lit up the White House in rainbow colors to "celebrate" SCOTUS' decision to legalize "marriage" between two members of the same gender.

On June 22, 2018, the Empire State Building in New York City was lit up in rainbow colors to "celebrate" a lifestyle that God clearly calls abomination.

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."  Leviticus 18:22 (KJV)

"If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."  Leviticus 20:13 (NKJV)

"They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator Himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.  That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved. Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, He abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too."  Romans 1:25-28,32 (NLT)

Also read I Timothy 1:9,10, I Corinthians 6:9, Genesis 19:1-29, and Jesus' words in Matthew 19:4,5.

No, this is not hate speech.  This is GOD'S WORD.  I didn't write it, and I can honestly say that I do not hate a single person.

The rainbow belongs to GOD, no one else.  The rainbow will always, always represent a sacred covenant between God and man—it is a reminder of God's promise recorded in Genesis 9:12-17.

"And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:  I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.  Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.  Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth. So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between Me and all life on the earth."

Could it be that hijacking what God considers sacred and attaching it to what He calls abomination is not sitting well with our Creator?

"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil."  Isaiah 5:20

Consider this.

On January 22, 2019, in New York City, (again) Governor Andrew Cuomo lit up the One World Trade Center A.K.A. "The Freedom Tower," the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Kosciuszko Bridge, and the Alfred E. Smith Building in the color of pink in "celebration" of late-term abortion.  (You can read an article about this HERE and the governor's website article HERE.)

The governor's words concerning this vile legislation literally gives me chills.

"The Reproductive Health Act is a historic victory for New Yorkers and for our progressive values," Governor Cuomo said. "In the face of a federal government intent on rolling back Roe v. Wade and women's reproductive rights, I promised that we would enact this critical legislation within the first 30 days of the new session - and we got it done. I am directing that New York's landmarks be lit in pink to celebrate this achievement and shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow."
Andrew Cuomo

A historic victory?  Celebrating the "achievement" of murdering fully developed human beings???  Seriously??

GOD created those human beings.  God intended them to be born and breathe in their first breath of life and grow and become adults to populate the earth.  Life and death are God's.  Just like the rainbow.  Who are we to rebel and not only condone such blatant sin, but CELEBRATE it, and flaunt it in His face?  Do we really think He is going to keep turning His head and overlooking our vile behavior forever?  Do we think God has lightened up on sin, just because we have?

Consider this.

On January 13, 2020, Christian Headlines reported that there have been over 61 million known abortions performed since Roe v Wade in 1973.

If the blood of Abel cried out to God from the ground after he was murdered by his brother, Cain, (Genesis 4:10) what must the sound of 61 million murdered babies' blood sound like as it cries out to God from the ground?  Would I be wrong to say that the volume of such is downright deafening in God's ears?

YES, God is love.  God is also just.  He gave His only begotten Son to lay down His life as a sacrifice for us to cleanse us from all sin.

"But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin."
I John 1:7

I think it is time for us to stop side-stepping the issues.
I've said it before.  I'll say it again.  I believe God is trying to get our attention.  I'll go a step farther and say that I believe God is angry over the sins we have so blatantly committed, then flaunted in His face.

"God is a just judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day."
Psalm 7:11

If this pandemic IS a worldwide wake up call, we are being given a choice.

We can wake up.
Or we can hit the snooze button, pretend this has nothing to do with our spiritual condition, and keep deceiving ourselves into thinking God will continue to turn a deaf ear to the babies' cries and turn His head away from all the sins we are persistently committing.

Obviously, there are many other sins we used to cry out against, also and now, we just shuffle them under the rug and convince ourselves God isn't really all that interested.  The level of compromise in our modern day churches and coming across our pulpits is unbelievable.

Consider this.

God is true to His Word, and it will be fulfilled.

So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
Isaiah 55:11

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
Galatians 6:7

Could it be that the only way out of this is to humble ourselves before God?  To turn our hearts back toward Him?  To let go of our disdain for Him?  To repent in Godly sorrow for our sins?  To turn from them and start living holy?

Consider this.

"When famine or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when enemies besiege them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among Your people Israel--being aware of their afflictions and pains, and spreading out their hands toward this temple--then hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. Forgive, and deal with everyone according to all they do, since You know their hearts (for You alone know the human heart), so that they will fear You and walk in obedience to You all the time they live in the land you gave our ancestors."
2 Chronicles 6:28-31

"If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
2 Chronicles 7:14

God's words above are directed to HIS people.  Christians.  Those who profess to know Him and keep His commandments.  We, as His people, need to humble ourselves, and pray, and seek His face, and turn from OUR wicked ways.  We need to stand in the gap for our families, our nation, and ourselves.

"Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.  And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken.  The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.  And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
Exodus 22:26-30

Christians who are reading this—don't you want to see revival?  Don't you want our land to be healed?  Will you make up the hedge?  Will you stand in the gap?  Will you take up your position and stand shoulder to shoulder with me in total repentance and complete humility before God?

On this Easter Sunday, will you allow God to resurrect a holy fire of revival in you?
May it be so, and may that holy fire spread all over this world.  May the cries of God's repenting children be louder than the cries of over 61 million murdered babies.  May it never be said in our generation that God could not find one who would stand in the gap and make up the hedge so He should not destroy the land!
Please consider, and please pray!

  2. Amen, Amen Cheryl!
God bless you for taking a stand and holding your ground on the Truth of God's Word.
Thank you for being willing to be used in the hands of God and sharing what He has placed upon your heart.
God has certainly showen you from His Word excellent passages that apply to where we are at,for such a time as this.
If I may, I would like to forward this on to others and allow God to reach the hearts of those who would not have the opportunity of reading this?
I will stand in the gap with you and your family and pray for a revival...not only for our country and world, but for my very own heart.
Revival must begin in the heart, and Lord Jesus, meet me where I am and burn within me a fire...with a repentant heart and complete humility I stand before a Holy and Righteous God seeking a change and all to the glory of God!

To God be the glory! May this posting and your urgent cry reach and touch the hearts of many.

    1. Dear Debbie! Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my grateful heart. Your words brought me to tears, and I could hardly read them for crying. You surely get it. Oh, this intense burden on my heart. I was up almost all night. I tried to sleep, and I had such a heaviness, it was almost palpable. I kept feeling like the Lord may be wanting me to pray for someone, but instead, He took me straight back to this post that I had started and decided I wouldn't finish. I couldn't get relief from the heaviness until I finished writing it and surrendered to His will to publish it. YES, PLEASE do share it with anyone and everyone you wish to. Christians must awaken out of the apathetic, lackadaisical comfort zone we have settled into. I am NOT a pessimist by any stretch of the imagination, but I truly believe judgment has only begun. It seems that we are in such a sleepy spiritual state, we are just not "getting it" the way we need to. I hope I am wrong on that. God only knows, but I am convinced HE is trying hard to shake us out of our lethargy. I am SO thankful for you and can't thank you enough for your kind, dear words. Sending much love and gratitude to you.

  3. Dear Cheryl,
Amen. I have been praying and will continue to pray for God to purify our hearts, to stir us up to repentance and whole-hearted serving of Him. I have also felt that this time is not for us to just get through and return to things "as normal," but that our Lord wants to purify His people. May we let Him stir our hearts, and bring His fresh conviction in so many ways. Bless you as you share His heart with so many.

  5. Cheryl, I have been asking the question, Lord Jesus, what are you saying to me during this pandemic? Revival begins in the hearts of believers! Let it begin in my heart. It is so easy for a Christian to become complacent and this is what Satan wants. A complacent Christian isn’t going to speak out against sin, they won’t go against the flow. Thank you Cheryl for pressing publish. I want my heart to be pure and sensitive to sin.

    Praise God, HE IS RISEN,

  6. Dear Precious Friend, Thank you for speaking out the Truth in love. For standing up for God and His Word.

As I read through your list of how deep the world has sunk into utter sin and evil, it made me feel physically sick. To see these sins all gathered together in one area just highlights how far away from God the world is! I was horrified to see that Cuomo had lit up the world trade center to "celebrate" late term abortion. I have no words...

Cheryl, you are such a blessing to your readers, always pointing us to the Word of God. The Scriptures you shared here caught my attention as they are stunningly indicative of what we are experiencing now with this pandemic.

Lord God, raise up your church and bring about revival!

May the Lord bless you richly dear friend.

    1. Dear friend! It makes me sick to my stomach, too, to think how deep in sin our nation has sunk. I was horrified to see what he did, too. If you get a chance, you can click on the link and see the actual pictures of it. It is CHILLING to see and to imagine that human beings could rejoice and be jubilant over the murder of babies in the womb all the way up to birth - or for murder of babies at all. They are babies from the moment of conception, obviously, so to rejoice about any of them being killed is incomprehensible. You will never know how much I appreciate your support and friendship. God, help us all to dig deep and stand strong and be faithful to Him. I have a strong feeling we will be VERY glad we did. Much love to you!

  8. Cheryl, a sobering post, but the words simply echo what many of us were already thinking. Thank you for being courageous in writing it. There are so many ways our country is rejecting God and those ways seem to be multiplying quickly. It does seem urgent that we humble ourselves before Him and pray, for this land seems so far gone already and only He can save it. The only light in the darkness is that God is in control and will only allow things to go so far and that we see Christians living out His Word and being a great testimony in perilous times. Thank you for sharing from your heart. Gentle Joy

  10. I just love your Holy Spirit boldness! I'm right there with you and passionate, too, to pray daily for our nation's turnaround from blatant sin. I heard a message to the church this morning to turn back the evil that is invading by praying four things for the church in this new era: 1) Really know Jesus in a personal way, not just knowledge of Him. 2) Contend for the faith! We believers are losing tests of faith. We need to stand for our faith and witness and debate others without so much emotion! 3)Study Scripture. 4) Repent and fast, too!

Happy Resurrection Day to you and the family. I know His love is set upon you and shines beautifully through you.

    1. It is ALL Him, my friend! I love the four things you mentioned. We ARE losing tests of faith. We are succumbing to the psychologic intimidation of the enemy and believing his lies. I do believe if we were in Bible days, we would be sitting in sackcloth and ashes, and yes, we surely do need to fast and pray like never before! Your kind words meant the world to me. May God bless you richly!

  11. Cheryl, I praise God for your boldness and courage in writing this post. It is not an easy thing to do, so to see you submit to the prompting of the Holy Spirit is an encouragement and a joy to behold. Yes, we desperately need revival in this country, in this world. True revival comes when we come face to face with our own sin first, repent, and then pray for our communities. The late evangelist Gypsy Smith once said about revival, “Find a piece of chalk, and find an empty room. Go into that room and shut the door. Draw a circle on the floor with that chalk, kneel down in that circle, and ask God to start revival right there.” I have longed to see revival in our country for many, many years. Long before we got to the gross immorality that we are witnessing today. I have lived nearly 7 decades and I have often asked, "How bad does it have to get before you return Lord?" Every time the answer is the same. "Much worse." Now I wonder if we are truly witnessing the "last days". I say this in relation to what you shared about the celebration of infanticide, the celebration of homosexuality. I haven't watched TV since 2007 and lately I've been exposed to it through my living arrangements. I'm heartbroken over what I see young children watching. Hollywood is making sin totally acceptable to the youngest generation. They are being indoctrinated into sin. It's shameful. I'm also disheartened when I see Christians respond to the coronavirus with fear. What have we to offer the unsaved if we cower at such things? If God is for us, who can be against us? What can separate us from the love of God? Nothing! I do think God is calling His Church to purification. I believe He is calling His remnant to step out in faith and share the truth of His word. That is what you do regularly here on your blog, and certainly no more boldly than today. Grieve over sin? Yes, we should because our Lord grieves over sin. Yet we can be joyful in the midst of sin and rebellion because our hope is in Christ the Lord. He has overcome sin and death and lives to intercede for us. We have the Holy Spirit to empower us and give us everything we need to perform the good works the Lord has prepared for us in advance. Keep giving the truth in love, Cheryl. God bless you, and God bless His people and stir them to action! Hugs, Nancy

  14. I echo Nancy's response to your post Cheryl... the cry of your heart rings out like a clarion bell sounding the alarm. Jesus said we must pay attention to the signs, and there are many signs that we are seeing of coming and impending judgment. There will be a price enacted for the horrific crimes against humanity with abortion at the helm of it all. May we realize that as this world careens wildly towards disaster like we've never seen, as Christians, we must dig into the Word, and soak up His spirit, and be bold to speak the truth of His Word like never before. May God bless your boldness for sharing his truth, and I pray that many souls will heed the call to repentance and turn to Christ. Much love to you dear friend, and may the blessings of the Lord be rich and abound in your life!

  15. Cheryl, I'm not sure how I missed this post. I'm so thankful you wrote it. My own blog is definitely a non-controversial place, somewhere where I like to share beauty and loveliness, but last year I felt compelled to write about abortion when the governor of New York celebrated that horrific abortion ruling by lighting up those buildings and bridges. I got a couple nasty emails calling me names, but do you know what? I was proud to "suffer" just a little for speaking truth. (although I hardly call that real suffering.) I imagine, or hope, you feel the same way, glad to stand up for the truth. I have to say, reading this just convicted me of something I've been meaning to do. We've had a movie streaming service (Netflix) for a while, and hardly ever watch it. I've felt increasingly uncomfortable about some of the content I hear they're developing/have developed, and I just went and cancelled it. Not any big heroic deed or even loss to me, but yes, we want to begin with repentance and godliness with ourselves first. I don't want to give any money to ugliness and sin. May we all, in small ways and bigger ways, rightly order our lives. Thank you for sharing your thoughts here. May the Lord richly bless you. xo Deborah

Repentance and godliness with ourselves first - yes, dear Lord, it is the cry of my heart! If only we all would take that firm stand and stop giving money to ugliness and sin!
